Welcome! There has been a lot going on up on the second floor of Center School. We have have been working hard at getting to know each other and becoming more comfortable with our daily routine and the surroundings of the classroom. My focus with the children is "living and learning as a TEAM" in second grade. I hope that you will join me in supporting "OUR TEAM!"
My goal is to keep you as up to date as possible with what's happening in second grade and in our classroom. Please feel free to email me at any time ([email protected]),
call (781-826-2631) or write a note. I am looking forward to a great year!
HOMEWORK
Homework is an important component of education.
Second graders will be required to complete 15-30 minutes of homework nightly. Monday-Thursday there will be a two-sided math sheet. In addition to this daily homework, second graders are expected to complete 15 minutes of reading every night. There will be a reading log coming home each Friday. Your child should be responsible for filling in the title of the books they have read and a brief summary of the beginning, middle and end of one their books. The reading log should be returned the following Friday. I also ask that your child spend at least 5 minutes each night on math fact practice. Any type of practice is acceptable. (iPad apps, computer games/websites, flash cards, etc.)
Specialist Schedule
Monday- Art
Field Trips
There will be a number of enrichment opportunities in and out of school during the year. More information will be sent home as plans are finalized. If you would be interested in being a chaperone or volunteer, please remember that you must complete a CORI form. If you have any questions or are unsure if your CORI is up to date, please see the secretaries in the front office.
Conferences
All parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for specific days and nights school wide. Our first conference will be November 19th from 1:00-3:00 and from 6:00-8:00. To select a time, a sign up sheet is available.
BIRTHDAYS
Second grade does not celebrate birthdays with individual parties or snacks. Each special day will be recognized in class with the singing of "Happy Birthday," a certificate, and a small token provided by me. In June, we will celebrate all of our summer birthdays. I also ask that you do not send invitations to be handed out at school unless the entire class will be invited. Please feel free to use the class directory to mail your invitations. Thank you for your support with this matter.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
There will be several opportunities for you to join us in our classroom for special events, celebrations and holidays. I am also hoping to have a "Mystery Reader" for about 15 minutes each week. The "Myster Reader" can bring a read aloud (or two) that ties into the particular season, an upcoming event, or something that relates to what we are studying as a special treat for the children.
Once our schedules are finalized I will be sending out a sign up sheet if anyone is interested.
