Curriculum News
I am honored to be your child’s second grade teacher. Second grade is a remarkable year of growth, socially, emotionally, and academically. A lot of hard work and fun is ahead of us. I am excited to take this journey with you and your child. You will learn about the curriculum, the routines and our daily schedule.
Homework
I will be sending homework every night except for Tuesday and Friday and on days where we have math assessments. Each night there will be a double-sided math practice sheet that should only take about 15minutes to complete.
I will also be sending home a reading log on Friday which should be completed each night and returned the next Friday. Weekend reading is optional. Fifteen minutes of reading each night is what is appropriate for second grade. If you feel your child is ready for more than 15 minutes, feel free to make note of that. Children will be required to log the title of their books. In addition to reading 15 minutes, a written piece, that is "optional" can be completed on a night of your choosing. This will incorporate reading, math or science skills that we are currently working on in class. Reading, is either a shared or individual experience, should be part of every child’s routine.
Your child may need assistance with their daily homework, especially at the beginning of the year so that is why they have a homework helper.

Birthdays
When it is your child’s birthday, you are welcome to send something in to share with the class such as pencils, erasers, etc. Food is not allowed in the classrooms, but a non-food item is welcome. Each student in the class will make birthday cards for the birthday girl or boy. In addition, they are welcome to visit the prize box.
Volunteering
I have a sign up sheet for volunteering. You can sign up to come in on special occasions or simply do some cutting ,ripping out math pages and book making from home. I also need a volunteer to tally up the money and order our scholastic books.
Parents are also welcome to volunteer to be a "mystery reader" in the classroom twice a month on Tuesdays. A sign up to be a mystery reader is available tonight.
Classroom Management
Children respond to positive reinforcement so that is why we have class dojo. Points are given to those who show good behavior such as listening, manners, perseverance, and trying their best. When students earn 50 points, they will get a sticker. When they earn 100 points, they will get a prize from our prize box and a certificate from the office.
Each student has a green stop light. If he or she is not making a good choice they will get a warning to change the behavior. If the behavior continues, their clip is put at yellow. If students change their behavior it will go back down to green but if the behavior continues the clip goes to red and the student will receive a think sheet. They will be removed from the activity and make a picture of what they did and what they will do to change the behavior. The think sheet will go home to get signed and be returned to school the next day.

We are in the process of planning field trips for this year. All field trips are directly related to the second grade curriculum. Specific field trips and dates will be announced as soon as plans are finalized.
